The myth about…

… BEING “PHOTOGENIC"

I’m not photogenic. This is a phrase that I often hear from people who are nervous about getting their photographs taken. And I completely understand where they're coming from. After all, for many of us, taking our picture can feel awkward and uncomfortable.

But here's the thing: being photogenic isn't something you're born with. It's not a natural talent that some people possess, and others don't. Instead, it's a skill we photographers learn over years of working one-on-one with clients. We have perfected poses; personally, as a professional photographer, it is all about making my clients feel seen and heard. For me, it is making sure you, my client, feel safe first, and through some breathing and just chatting at first, set you at ease, and soon you'll feel relaxed in front of the camera.

I understand, for a lot of people, getting in front of the camera can be a daunting scenario, but once you've relaxed and see that it is not that scary, you'll actually have a lot of fun, and often I hear clients say they can't wait to do this again! (and they have yet to see their images at this point). The customer experience is my top priority, so 90% of my job is done if you are feeling good.

One of the most important things to remember is that a great photograph is not just about how you look but also how you feel. It will show in the picture if you're self-conscious or uncomfortable. On the other hand, if you're feeling happy and confident, that will also come through.

So how do you get to that place of feeling good in front of the camera? One approach is to practice. Take selfies, ask a friend to snap some pictures of you, or even hire a professional photographer for a photo shoot. The more you get used to being in front of the camera, the more natural and relaxed you'll feel.

Another strategy is to focus on the positive. Instead of worrying about your flaws or imperfections, think about the things you like about yourself and try to highlight those in the picture. It could be your smile, eyes, or sense of style. Whatever it is, focus on that and let it shine through.

Finally, remember there's no "right" way to look in a photograph. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms; the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in your skin. So embrace your uniqueness, and don't be afraid to show the world who you are. After all, that's what makes you genuinely photogenic.

I have created a fun little guide with five tips on looking great in all photos so that you can start practicing today! These easy tips and tricks will be fun to learn and implement and will make you the expert next time everyone lines up for a group shot - or this will be your chance to (finally) like that impromptu photo of yourself.
