How to choose a Senior Photographer

The sheer number of photographers out there can be overwhelming! Each one is different and as unique as you are, so here is a little guide to give you some tips on what to look for when picking your perfect Senior-Year photographer.

1. Location

You don’t want your photos to look like everybody else’s right? Be sure when consulting a photographer that they have access to unlimited locations and can hand-select hot spots to match your style and personality.

2. Consistency

All photographers have to start somewhere, but you want to make sure your photographer will give you well-planned consistent high quality images that work together as a gallery, even with outfit changes. It’s frustrating posing for someone who is just taking hundreds of shots in the hope of getting a few lucky ones. Your photographer should have a portfolio of consistently great work that you resonate with. Otherwise, you may end up with too few good images. Below you’ll find pics from Paige’s gorgeous Senior Session. We were able to capture a few looks in multiple areas of a park location. Notice how the selection holds together as a gallery, and every image is just as beautiful as the next.

3. Edits

It’s absolutely essential to choose a photographer who is as good in front of the computer as they are behind the lens. Your photographer must thoroughly understand how to professionally edit your photos, and NOT simply add the same filter to all of your photos and call them edited! Your natural beauty should be enhanced to reveal glowing, clear, natural-toned skin. I custom edit every individual image to perfection using professional techniques. The result is a clean, classic, and timeless Senior-Year portfolio.

4. Photo Products

I provide a full end-to-end service, and don’t just hand over a USB drive of images, leaving you to figure out the printing and album product options. Although it’s great to post digital files to Instagram and Twitter, my Senior-Year clients always tell me that there’s nothing like receiving a leather bound album of all their photos. The album is a keepsake that becomes even more special over the years, so make sure your photographer provides heirloom quality photo products in addition to digital files!

5. Reviews

Once you’ve found a photographer whose work you like, be sure to check out their client testimonials. It’s important that your Senior-Year photographer not only provides amazing images, but also an amazing photography experience and customer service that will make your session an experience to remember for all the right reasons.

6. Turn-around times

When choosing a Senior-Year photographer, make sure you are clear on their turn-around time for completing your Senior-Year images. I have a boutique studio approach: by only scheduling a handful of clients each month, I am able to perfectly customize each Senior Session and offer fast turn-around times. I post a sneak peek within 24 hrs after the shoot, and a full gallery reveal within the next week.

7. Professional Hair and Makeup

To have your hair and make-up done by a professional takes all the stress out of getting ready for your photoshoot no matter how enthusiastic you may be about doing your own makeup. I work with certified professionals who will ensure you’re camera-ready for those super close-up shots.

8. Let’s chat

I know most of us dread making phone calls these days, but I promise you that taking a few minutes to talk to your photographer on the phone is crucial! This initial personal interaction will let you know instantly if you connect with them and will be comfortable at a shoot with them. Your photographer should be friendly, passionate and caring about your Senior Session experience, AND about how your images turn out! I also offer free consultations at my studio so you can look at the products I offer and talk about your session.

9. Book early

As soon as you’ve found the Senior-Year photographer you want to work with, it’s time to book! Senior Sessions fill up quickly because of high demand each year, so don’t wait!
